What is Inland Marine Insurance and What does it Cover?

By Kami Jones, AU, AINS - Wexford Insurance - Indianapolis, IN

Inland Marine insurance can often be confused with Marine Insurance. Inland Marine insurance covers products, materials, and equipment when transported over land (by truck or train) or while temporarily housed by a third party like in a warehouse. Marine insurance, on the other hand, covers items while in transit on water. Inland Marine losses are most often caused by collision and cargo theft.

What Type of Businesses Need Inland Marine Insurance?

A business that frequently ships products or equipment, especially high-value products or equipment, most likely needs inland marine insurance to protect against collision or cargo theft. In additional to business that ship items frequently, if a business’s specific operations might need inland marine insurance. For example, if a business puts products on exhibit multiple times a year, the inland marine insurance can help cover the items that are moved from exhibit to exhibit if there was a loss.

What kind of Equipment or Products are Covered?

Inland Marine Insurance Policies can cover a wide range of equipment and products including but not limited to:

  • Computers and equipment including servers

  • Communications and networking equipment

  • Construction and Contracting equipment

  • Medical and Scientific equipment

  • Photography equipment

In addition to covering equipment, Inland Marine Insurance Policies offer special types of coverage not found in other policies such as:

  • Bailee’s Customer Coverage – Protects client’s property that is left in the care of your business like a warehouse or repair shop.

  • Builder’s Risk – Protects structures and materials during new construction projects or renovations.

  • Exhibition and Fine Art Coverage – Keeps valuable items protected while on exhibit, in transit or on loan.

  • Installation Floater – Covers materials from the moment they are loaded onto a truck until they are put to use or installed.
